Film Review #50 - Anyone But You (2023)

Impressions: My first impression of "Anyone But You" was overwhelmingly positive. An exciting opening sequence sets the stage for a fun film that hooks viewers.

Music: The soundtrack is a vibrant mix of genres, seamlessly blending upbeat jazz, indie pop, and slow R&B. This eclectic mix creates a dynamic mood throughout the film, enhancing both the comedic and dramatic scenes. The music ranges from slow, romantic tunes to lively, poppy tracks, contributing significantly to the film's overall appeal.

Story and Writing: The writing in "Anyone But You" is very engaging, with humor skillfully woven into the script. Humor is a key component of this film, seamlessly integrated into both the script and the visual elements. The comedic timing is spot on, contributing to the film's engaging and light-hearted tone. The dialogues are lively and deliver well to the development of the film's narrative.

Cinematography and Editing: The cinematography is a standout feature, with a variety of shots and camera movements that keep the visuals interesting and dynamic. Techniques like medium shots, overhead shots, and slow zooms in and out add depth to each scene. The night scenes are particularly well-executed, with excellent lighting that ensures visibility and mood. Although used carefully, Dutch tilts successfully add a distinctive visual element. In my opinion, there are some editing timing issues, but these are minor and do not detract significantly from the overall quality.

I particularly enjoyed the creative use of unfocused light techniques during the night scenes, which added a cinematic quality to the film. Similarly to Martin Scorsese, the film also features fast camera pans and a well-placed joke.

Acting and Chemistry: The chemistry between the two lead actors, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, is remarkable, adding a layer of authenticity to their performances. Their interactions are natural and convincing, enhancing the film's emotional impact.

Conclusion: The ending scene of "Anyone But You" is exceptionally well-executed, offering a unique and memorable conclusion to the film. The film stands out in its genre thanks to its outstanding cinematography, captivating plot, and great music.

First Impression: From the start, I must say, I love the characters (also the new ones) in Kung Fu Panda 3. They retain the charm that captured our hearts in the initial movie.
