Film Review #021 - War Dogs (2016)

War Dogs (2016) is a crime comedy film directed by Todd Phillips and written by Stephen Chin, Todd Phillips, and Jason Smilovic. The film stars Jonah Hill (as Efraim Diveroli) and Miles Teller (as David Packouz) as two young men who become arms dealers during the Iraq War.

“War Dogs” is a cinematic masterpiece with crystal clear and crisp cinematography that brings scenes to life in a dynamic, yet not overly exaggerated way. There were various interesting shots, e.g., close-up shots, medium shots, shoulder level, knee level,  incorporated in this movie making it more interesting to watch. Moreover, slow-motion effects are particularly striking, combined with smooth transitions that showcase Todd Philips' talent. The color palette is very well-chosen, adding depth to the visual storytelling.

The soundtrack by Cliff Martinez is a standout feature, brilliantly blending various genres to complement the narrative. From the mysterious and spooky opening track to the gritty Dutch house electronic music, the selection is diverse and impactful. The music is so varied that it also includes Indie Rock, acoustic guitar music, hip hop, and jazz, creating a multi-genre experience that is both impressive and memorable. I believe it is hard to find the specific song for each scene making the movie contain multi-genre songs from electronic to something different. It was well-done.

The story itself is engaging and well-crafted, with meticulous attention to detail. Set in 2006-08 but filmed in 2015, the inclusion of period-specific elements like flip phones and old versions of Computer OS adds authenticity. The sound mixing is balanced and enhances the overall experience.

David Packouz's character, known from the Divergent movies, is particularly well-portrayed, standing out as a highlight. The story narration by David is reminiscent of Scorsese's style, a technique that adds depth and perspective to the film. The actors did genuinely a really great job in acting. There was a sense of great character development.

The base story and historical context of "War Dogs" is another strong aspect, mirroring real-life scenarios. This makes the film particularly interesting for students of International Relations and contract law, providing a unique lens through which to view these subjects.

In conclusion, Todd Philips has done an amazing job with "War Dogs." His work is impressive and does not disappoint, making this film a must-watch for a wide range of audiences.
