Film Review #46 - Home Sweet Home (2023)
Home Sweet Home (2023) is a mystery horror one-shot film directed and written by Thomas Sieben. It left a lasting, albeit unsettling, impression on me. The story is full of intrigue and suspense, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats without revealing any crucial plot details. The story revolves around Maria, a pregnant woman visiting her father-in-law's secluded country house, where she encounters a series of mysterious and disconcerting events.
My experience watching this film, unfortunately, leaned more towards confusion and disappointment. This film was a sneak peak film in my local cinema and it left a negative emotional impact. During the film 6 people left the cinema hall from this movie. While the concept promised intrigue, the execution faltered. The storyline felt muddled and illogical, with a visual narrative that often bordered on tedious. This lack of clarity in storytelling led to moments where my attention waned, and the overall pace seemed to drag.
However, it's noteworthy that the film's sound design stood out as its redeeming feature. The use of Hans Zimmer's ticking clock effect and Shepard tone, reminiscent of "Dunkirk (2017)," added a layer of tension and mystery. The incorporation further enhanced this atmosphere, creating a sense of unease that was effective. The sound design elements added moments of fear and intrigue, although the narrative was otherwise confusing.
Despite the film's ambitious one-shot format, which is commendable for its technical challenge, "Home Sweet Home" struggled to leave a positive emotional impact. The tension and mystery, while present, were overshadowed by the film's lack of coherent storytelling and engaging visuals.
In conclusion, while "Home Sweet Home" showcases some elements of strong sound design, this movie was quite disappointing and did not live up to my expectations. Yet, I do believe that one-shot movies are very hard to make but in terms of the emotional impact and storytelling, I was disappointed.
