Film Review #034 - Wish (2023)

Wish (2023), directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn and produced by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, is Disney's latest animated film with its 100th year anniversary. The film, which debuted nationally on November 22, 2023, tells an original story written by producer and screenwriter Jordan Fisher. It has garnered mixed reviews from critics with earning $145.5 million worldwide as of December 25, 2023 and a budget of $200 million. My personal experience with 'Wish' was outstanding, marking it as a film of exceptional enjoyment and emotional impact.

Synopsis: This movie is about a young girl named Asha that grants a wish to the character called Star.

Animation Quality: The animation, in my opinion, though considered imperfect by some, is actually one of the film's strengths. Even though I have watched the trailer I thought that the animation is incomplete, yet watching this in the movie theater I changed my mind; the animation style actually looks really good despite the fact that it looks incomplete and imperfect. Nevertheless, it still has quite a unique, innovative style which are rich in colors and adds vibrancy to the movie; moreover, it effectively brings the characters and settings to life. The portrayal of animals in the film is particularly cute and appealing.

Cinematography: The cinematography is commendable, with well-crafted medium shots and close-ups that enhance the storytelling. The film’s visual composition, color grading and palette added aesthetic appeal.

Storyline and Originality: Contrary to some reviews mentioning that the story was generated by AI, I found the storyline original and captivating. The film's narrative felt fresh and in the movie theater audience, especially kids, were kept engaged and laughed at some humorous lines that were in the movie

Music and Emotional Impact: The music by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice was a standout aspect, imbuing the movie with emotional depth. I was particularly moved by the third song in the movie called “This Wish”, which brought me to tears in the cinema. The music's ability to evoke such strong emotions highlights its effective implementation and relevance to the story.

Characterization: Characterization in the movie was a standout aspect, with each character bringing a unique dimension to the story. The main character was portrayed with depth and complexity, making her journey engaging. The supporting characters, including her quirky companions, added charm and depth, enhancing the emotional resonance of the narrative. The performances were heartfelt, with each character's emotional expressions feeling genuine and impactful, contributing significantly to the film's overall appeal.

Climactic Moments: The ending of the movie was really touching. It had a strong and emotional scene that perfectly wrapped up the story. The powerful story and emotional music at the end create a memorable and tearful experience.

Overall: Wish (2023) is a beautifully animated, emotionally engaging film with a strong script, impressive cinematography, and a memorable musical score. It's a movie that not only resonated with me but also resonates with audiences, offering both humor and heartfelt moments.

Rating: 10/10
