Film Review #010 - Ex Machina (2014)

Ex Machina is a 2014 science fiction psychological thriller film written and directed by Alex Garland. This is his first debut film release which is really impressive.

The movie shows the relationship between Caleb, a programmer, and Ava, an AI. As Caleb tries to assess how smart Ava is, their conversations get more thought-provoking and complicated. This movie makes viewers think about consciousness and emotions in AI.

The characters are well-crafted, particularly Nathan's character whose witty humor and occasional dad jokes add a lighter touch. Caleb is portrayed as a sympathetic and intelligent figure. His cautious yet eloquent questioning highlights the film's focus on the Turing Test, underscoring the tension between insecurity and intellect.

Dialogues and Themes are intellectually stimulating. "Ex Machina" is really good at showing how humans and AI interact, making us think about what the Turing Test means. The conversations are smart and easy to understand; they include instructive and educational dialogues. The theme of trust is a big and an important part of the story. Moreover, "Ex Machina" mixes tension with surprising moments of humor. These moments are clever plot twists that keep the audience engaged and surprised. Overall, the script and writing is well thought out.

"Ex Machina" looks amazing with its cinematography, combining nature and technology. The film uses different types of shots, like nature shots, as well as close-ups and medium shots of characters that have a depth in it.

The futuristic vibes of the soundtrack, blending guitar strings with deep bass and acoustic guitar strings, play a pivotal role. This music has two moods: one is influenced by technology, and the other is hopeful and human. This is a very smart choice of the movie and I find it amazing. This difference reflects how the film looks at the relationship between humans and AI.

The movie's surprising plot twist and emotional ending will really stick with you. The purpose of Ex Machina is about what it means to be human and if robots can ever be conscious. This film will make you think about AI in a way that we should be more cautious about it and such sensitive topics as trust. Overall, this movie is fantastic and it is a must-watch for anyone interested in the future of technology and humanity.
